Craft Denim – Weaving Struggles into Dreams

Every stitch of Craft Denim carries a story, one that began in Pekalongan, with a young man named Asyfa Fuadi, who turned hardship into heritage and struggle into strength. Asyfa did not come from privilege. His late father once supplied handwoven fabrics in Bali, until the tragic Bali bombing swept everything away. When it was time for him to study, there was no family business to lean on, no steady income to support him. So, while pursuing his degree in Chemical Engineering with a focus on Textile Technology at Universitas Islam Indonesia, he fought to survive. He built and sold custom guitars, printed t-shirts for new students in Yogyakarta, and played music at small cafes like Homesick and Lucifer. His nights were filled with melodies and his days with sketches and designs he freelanced online. Every rupiah he earned went toward his tuition and daily needs. It was during an Entrepreneurship class that a simple sentence from his lecturer shifted his mindset:

“Idea + Creativity + Other people’s facilities + Market = Money.

He had no capital. But he had creativity. And that became his first weapon.

From Looms of the Past to Denim of the Future

In 2012, Asyfa returned to his roots, continuing the craft of his grandfather, a master weaver in Pekalongan. When three young entrepreneurs from Jakarta—Bluesville—came to him to order woven fabric, he was surprised. Young people wearing traditional weaves? And even more, they showed him how Japan had turned weaving into a global culture. That encounter lit a fire. He decided to try something bold, something no one around him had done before: weaving denim by hand.

It was grueling. He spent months experimenting—changing yarns, adjusting wooden reeds, even re-engineering his loom. Failure came again and again. At one point, he nearly gave up, deciding that if his next attempt failed, he would quit for good. But in the sixth month, something extraordinary happened: his loom, now modified by his own hands, produced denim fabric. It was rough, imperfect, but real. It was the birth of Craft Denim’s soul.

Building More Than a Brand

For five years, Asyfa honed his weaving, before finally launching Craft Denim as a brand in 2017. He carried with him a belief:

“When we come together as a community, collaboration becomes possible.”

That spirit led Craft Denim to INA Craft, a milestone that fulfilled a dream his father never reached. He collaborated with Filosofi Kopi, and his path eventually led him to meet one of the Head Designers of Tommy Hilfiger, a meeting that opened doors to recognition in Europe and beyond.

It took seven years before Craft Denim became profitable. But for Asyfa, money was never the point. Craft Denim was—and still is—his child. Investors came knocking, offering capital and partnerships, but he turned them down. For him, Craft Denim’s value lies not in money, but in the story, the journey, and the soul woven into every piece.

Hope Woven in Indigo

Today, Asyfa’s focus is on natural dyeing. His vision is clear:

that one day, fashion can exist in harmony with nature.

Craft Denim is more than fabric. It is a testament to resilience, a bridge between tradition and innovation, and proof that a dream born in a small town like Pekalongan can reach the world.

Because in every thread of Craft Denim lies not just denim, but a story of survival, passion, and an unyielding belief that culture—when preserved and reimagined, can change lives.
